Pear season is almost here at Messy Farm — and if you know, you know.
Our Organic Heirloom Williams’ bon chrétien pears are at their best for only a short window each year.
We grow our pears for flavour, not convenience. For eating, not enduring long journeys or surviving months in cold storage like supermarket fruit. If you’ve ever bitten into a pear and felt underwhelmed, this may be the experience you’ve been missing.

Sweetened by nothing but the sun
Good fruit doesn’t need much help!
Our pears are grown slowly in healthy soil, with careful attention to the orchard around them. Given time, sunlight, and space to develop naturally, they become gently sweet and lightly floral — often fragrant before you even take the first bite.
When ripe, Williams’ pears are silky in texture. The flesh yields easily, releasing juice that’s clean and balanced — never watery, never cloying. With each bite, the flavour deepens and lingers.

Our pears arrive firm – and it’s a good thing
Pears are one of the few fruits that are actually better when picked early.
If left to fully ripen on the tree, pears can become mushy and surprisingly flavourless. They also ripen from the inside out, which makes judging true ripeness tricky.
That’s why we harvest our pears while they’re still firm — at the point where flavour is fully developed, but the texture hasn’t yet softened. When your box arrives from Messy Farm, the pears will feel firm to the touch.
This is completely intentional and gives you control over when and how they ripen at home.

The Pear Procedure
To enjoy your pears at their absolute best, we recommend the following simple method. You can keep most of your pears in the fridge and only ripen what you need – something that’s often impossible with supermarket pears that have already spent months enduring long journeys or in cold storage before you even see them.

PEAR-fect for preserving
If you’re planning to bottle, poach, dry, or bake your pears, firmer fruit is ideal. Our pears arrive in excellent condition for preserving, so if that’s your plan, we recommend getting started soon after delivery.
They’re wonderfully versatile fruits — just as good eaten over the sink as they are sliced into a salad, baked into a tart, or preserved to enjoy long after the season has passed.
Over on the Messy Farm Recipe page, we share simple, thoughtful ways to preserve and cook with pears.
